COPPA Compliance
Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Compliance Policy
Kid-Inspired Classroom Student Portal
At Kid-Inspired Classroom, we are committed to protecting the privacy of children who use our services through the Kid-Inspired Classroom Student Portal. This policy is designed to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and outlines how we handle the collection and use of personal information from children under 13 years of age.
1. School Consent in Lieu of Parental Consent
In accordance with COPPA, Kid-Inspired Classroom relies on schools and educators to obtain parental consent when they use the Student Portal in the classroom setting.
- Teachers and school administrators create student accounts on behalf of their students.
- In doing so, the school acts as the parent’s agent, providing consent for the collection and use of student information strictly for educational purposes.
- Schools are required to ensure that they have the appropriate authority to provide this consent on behalf of parents and guardians under applicable laws and local district policies.
2. What Information We Collect
When student accounts are created by teachers or school staff, the following limited personal information may be collected:
- First and last name (or nickname)
- Grade level
- Assigned teacher or class
- Email address (For login purposes. Alias emails can be used.)
- Student-generated content (e.g., writing samples, responses to assignments)
We do not collect sensitive personal information such as phone numbers or home addresses from students.
3. How We Use Student Information
The information collected is used solely for educational purposes, including:
- Providing access to assignments and learning resources
- Tracking student progress
- Enabling teachers to deliver instruction and feedback
We do not use student information for advertising or marketing purposes.
4. Data Security and Sharing
- Student data is protected using appropriate technical and administrative safeguards.
- We do not share student data with third parties except as required by law or with trusted service providers necessary for operating the portal, all of whom are bound by confidentiality and data protection agreements.
- We do not sell or rent any student information.
5. Parental Rights and Access
Although consent is provided by the school, parents have the right to:
- Review their child’s personal information
- Request that we delete their child’s data
- Refuse to allow further collection or use of their child’s information
Parents wishing to exercise these rights can contact their child’s teacher or school administrator, or email us directly at support@kid-inspired.com
FERPA Compliance
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Compliance Policy
Kid-Inspired Classroom Student Portal
At Kid-Inspired Classroom, we are committed to protecting the privacy and security of student education records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This policy outlines how we support schools in maintaining FERPA compliance when using the Kid-Inspired Classroom Student Portal.
1. FERPA Overview
FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. Under FERPA:
- Parents (or eligible students over 18) have the right to access their student’s education records.
- Schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student before disclosing personally identifiable information (PII) from education records—unless the disclosure is to a school official with a legitimate educational interest.
2. School Control of Student Records
When schools use the Kid-Inspired Classroom Student Portal, the school:
- Retains ownership and control of all student education records.
- Designates Kid-Inspired Classroom as a "school official" with a legitimate educational interest under FERPA.
This designation allows us to receive, access, and use student data only as directed by the school and solely for educational purposes.
3. Information We Collect and Use
When a teacher or school administrator creates student accounts, the following limited student information may be used:
- First and last name or nickname
- Grade level
- Email address (For login purposes. Alias emails can be used.)
- Assigned teacher/class
- Educational content and progress
This data is collected only for educational use within the portal, and never for marketing or advertising.
4. Data Privacy and Security
We take student data privacy seriously and follow these key practices:
Data Access: Only authorized Kid-Inspired Classroom personnel have access to student data, and only when necessary to support the educational services.
Data Sharing: We do not share student information with third parties except:
- At the direction of the school
- With service providers bound by strict confidentiality agreements
- As required by law
- Data Protection: We implement administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to protect student data from unauthorized access, disclosure, or misuse.
5. Parent and School Rights
Schools retain full control of student data and are responsible for fulfilling parent and student rights under FERPA. This includes:
- Providing access to education records upon request
- Updating or correcting inaccurate information
- Requesting deletion of data as permitted by law
Schools may contact Kid-Inspired Classroom at any time to request assistance with fulfilling these obligations.
6. Data Retention and Deletion
Student data is retained only for as long as necessary to provide educational services. Upon request by the school, or termination of the school’s use of our services, all student data can be:
- Securely deleted in compliance with applicable data retention policies
