All About the Kid-Inspired ELL Curriculum

Curriculum Details

The curriculum was written for K-12 and includes 16 levels all together with an additional growing library of fluency readers. The units throughout the curriculum all include speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The grammar lessons, for example, focus more on vocabulary, speaking, and writing with good grammar. The literacy lessons included throughout the curriculum include both reading passages as well as common-core aligned graphic organizers for responding to the passages. The literacy lessons also include writing prompts for narrative, opinion, and informational types of writing as well as scaffolds for both the organizers and the writing to help students at lower-proficiency levels.

There are varying numbers of lessons in each level. In the lower levels there are more units and fewer lessons per unit. In the higher levels there are fewer units with more lessons.

Broadly speaking, from Beginners 1 - Low-Intermediate 3, there are 15 units to a level. Each unit has around 2-4 lessons included. From Low-Intermediate 4 - Intermediate 2, there are 8 units with 4-6 lessons included for each unit. In Intermediate 3 and up, there are 4 units each with around 9 lessons.

The curriculum was designed with a spiral model in mind where students are constantly coming back around to pick up and review and build on content they learned previously.

The curriculum is based on research and best practices and aligned to the Common Core without bias, stereotypes, or discrimination with the goal of helping students access grade-level skills and content across all 4 language domains in engaging ways. The curriculum was developed—and continues to be developed—over a period of more than 10 years in cooperation with dozens of teachers and 1000s of students. Updates have been made constantly based on classroom teacher feedback and student assessment results. The materials are tools that can be used in a wide variety of evidence-based ways. This is why resources in the curriculum have been connected on the site to a growing list of research-based activities from top experts in the field.

There are also hundreds of other supporting resources including vocabulary themes, speaking infographics, a library of fluency readers, anchor charts, graphic organizers, writing resources, etc. that can be used in combination with the curriculum or as standalone resources.
