Online Teaching Platform Options like Zoom, Koala, Classin and how to teach interactive online lessons

You can teach using most any platform you'd like. Some common options are:

  1. Zoom
  2. Google Meet
  3. Classin
  4. Koala (One of my favorites. I've spent a fair amount of time with one of the founders and it is a very engaging platform for kids.)
  5. Skype

Online teaching can definitely take some time to get the hang of and find your preferred strategies. There are a few ways of allowing students to engage during lessons.

If you're sharing your screen (the simplest way), you can just log in to the regular membership and share your screen. Zoom offers a Remote Control feature where you can let your student(s) control your screen which allows them to interact with the interactive lessons themselves. Otherwise, you will be the one interacting with the content in the lesson for the most part. You teach and then ask your student(s) to tell you what they want to do and you do it for them in the interactive lesson. Most platforms offer a draw tool which allows your student to complete tasks by drawing on the screen or showing you where they want you to interact by drawing on the screen.

If you're using Classin or Koala, they have a in-app browser tool that a lot of teachers like. When you log in to the Student Portal in an in-app browser tool from Classin or Koala or other, both you and your student can interact with lessons at the same time.

One final option uses the Student Portal. With the Student Portal student seats, you can give login credentials to your students (up to 3 seats are included right now for free). This gives you the option where both you and your student log in and either both of you share your screens at the same time (some platforms allow for this, but not too many) or you take turns sharing your screen. When taking turns, you teach and show your student what to do first and then they share their screen and complete what you've asked them to do which allows them to do the interactive portions themselves. It is also great for listening practice since you will be talking to them and they need to listen and follow through.
