Choosing a Level in the Membership

There are a couple of tools to help you choose a level:

One is the Kid-Inspired ESL Assessment ->

The assessment is more involved and gives you a lot of data on how a student is doing in each area. There is a mini-course on how to use it included with the membership as well with tips if you have a lot of students to assess. This can also be found on the Teacher Tools page or by clicking on the green Get Organized button on the homepage.

The second option is the Level Chooser Assistant ->

This is a much quicker option where you answer a few questions and get a recommended level. There is a button for this on the homepage but you can also find it on the Get Organized page as well.)

Here is a link to the Getting Organized page which has a lot of other great resources and tips for how to get up and running with the curriculum.

I'd highly recommend getting a more specific understanding of where each student is in the different language domains using the Kid-Inspired ELL Placement Assessment.

After getting a clearer picture of each student's abilities, then I would recommend choosing a level that works for the average student in the class. Then you can give some of the more challenging resources to your stronger students who are often able to work a little more independently after they finish the content of the lesson. For your lower-proficiency level students, you can scaffold the content for them. Scaffolds are included with most lessons to help give them a step up. You can also pair them with stronger students to get some extra help.

Here is the link to the placement assessment. There is a little mini course there as well with some tips on giving the assessment with multiple students at the same time.
