What if the material is too difficult for my students?
When your students struggle with content, there are a couple of possibilities:
- We need to change up our teaching strategies.
- We need to change up the materials.
You chose the materials you did for a reason. It's possible that you chose grade-level materials because you know your students need to access rigorous grade-level standards, or maybe you feel like your students struggle in a particular area and you want to challenge them.
You can switch levels in the curriculum or you can pull specific resources on those areas you feel your students need more practice with to supplement the level you are working on (i.e. grammar, reading, writing, etc.).
It is also important to consider whether all of your students are struggling, or just some of the weaker students. In that situation, the issue is more about differentiation. You can read more about differentiation here.
Most of the time, a change in teaching strategy can make all the difference. There are all kinds of supports and scaffolds we can use to help boost our students up so that they can access the materials we are giving them.
